Tudorville / Construction Phase

The project in Surry Hills involves the thoughtful transformation of Tudorville, a Victorian-era cottage, blending heritage restoration with a contemporary architectural approach.

 

The design includes the careful demolition of a rear single-storey wing and internal walls, while preserving and restoring the original front façade. The ground and first floors are reconfigured, with a new single-storey rear addition that creates a seamless flow between old and new. The ground floor houses intimate, well-proportioned spaces, including a study, bedroom, living room, pantry/laundry, and bathroom. The new kitchen and Dining area, located in the contemporary rear extension, steps down to meet the garden, enhancing the connection to the outdoors. The design also integrates a paved patio that extends the living space into the landscaped garden.

On the first floor, three bedrooms, including a master with ensuite and robe, are tucked within the roof form. New dormer windows, combined with a zinc roof and discreet skylights, bathe the interiors in natural light while respecting the original architectural character. Throughout the house, careful attention has been given to materiality and detailing. The interplay of natural textures and muted tones enhances the feeling of openness and calm, while the new addition introduces modern lines and clean forms without overpowering the heritage features.

Landscaping, natural light, and ventilation lie at the heart of the design strategy, ensuring a harmonious balance between indoor and outdoor spaces. The result is a residence that feels light, airy, and connected to its surroundings, blending contemporary living with the charm of its Victorian heritage.
